Monza Ends in Frustration for the No. 4 Optimum Motorsport McLaren

The second round of the 2026 GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup took the No. 4 Optimum Motorsport McLaren 720S GT3 EVO of Adam Smalley, Freddie Tomlinson and Harry George to the legendary Autodromo Nazionale Monza, the iconic ‘Temple of Speed’. With one of the strongest GT3 grids in world motorsport assembled for the three-hour contest, the British squad arrived in Italy looking to build on the experience gained during the season opener at Paul Ricard.

Unfortunately, the race was effectively over before it had truly begun. As the field charged towards the opening chicane on lap one, a huge multi-car accident unfolded in one of the most dramatic incidents seen in recent GT World Challenge Europe history. The chain reaction crash involved numerous front running cars and immediately brought the race under safety car, with several contenders eliminated on the spot. The No. 4 Optimum Motorsport McLaren was among those caught in the incident and sustained significant radiator damage. Despite the team’s efforts, the car was unable to continue, resulting in retirement after just five laps and a non-classified result in the Gold Cup category. It was a disappointing end to a weekend that had promised much more for the young McLaren trio.

While the result was not representative of the pace and potential shown by the crew throughout the weekend, Monza was another valuable learning experience in one of the most competitive GT championships in the world. With the championship still in its early stages, the focus quickly shifts from disappointment to opportunity as the team prepares for the biggest challenge of the season.

Next up is the CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa, the blue-riband event of GT racing and the undisputed highlight of the GT World Challenge Europe calendar. Taking place at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit, the race is regarded as the most prestigious GT3 endurance event in the world, attracting the strongest teams, manufacturers and drivers from across the globe. For Optimum Motorsport and the No. 4 McLaren crew, it represents the perfect opportunity to bounce back, tackle one of motorsport’s greatest endurance races, and fight for a result on the sport’s biggest stage.
